The first concert I ever attended was somewhere around 1991 or 1992 at the University of Puget Sound. David Benoit, a jazz pianist, was the performer. His
Urban Daydreams album came out a year or so previous, and I was only a year or two into piano lessons and really enjoyed hearing that album played throughout the house. My favorite piece at that time was ‘As If I Could Reach Rainbows`.
The concert itself, I barely remember. What I do recall, was that it was a smaller audience, and from where I was seated, maybe three rows back, I could watch his hands on the keyboard, but it was cool, and that experience ensured that whenever I saw a future piano-based concert (Dr. John, Elton John, Billy Joel, etc), that I’d be seated where I could always see their hands, instead of just seeing a performer behind a piano.
I really wish I could remember more, but I still have his piano book from way back when, and I bring it out from time-to-time just to remind myself of the first concert I attended.
